The Story
Desmond is a memorable seven-year-old—curious, creative, and social. Born with spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and autism, these are just part of his story. Desmond is joyful, always ready with a handshake or hug. His kindness is evident in all he does.
Desmond is outgoing and independent. He knows what he wants and faces life with determination, enjoying routines and structure. He spends his days painting, baking, cooking, exploring outdoors, playing piano, or listening to music. He loves being silly, dreaming big, and creating new things. He hopes to be a veterinarian, or as he says, a “pet doctor.”
Desmond cannot feel below his knees and uses AFO braces and a wheelchair. He’s independent, but some tasks, like getting into the bathtub or crossing certain floors, require help. In busy places, his family stays close, as his autism makes him easily distracted. What Desmond needed most was a space that felt safe, comfortable, and supportive of his independence.
Desmond’s transformation is nothing short of magical. Knowing his love for all things space, the team created a bedroom that feels like stepping into another world. Designed by Ryan Williams and the incredible team at Artisan Design Studio, his new room features thoughtful details that spark imagination—including a rocket ship tent that invites adventure and play. A special highlight is the incredible space wall created by Mike Kamber of Therapy Gyms, adding an immersive and inspiring element to the room. More than just a beautiful space, it’s a place where Desmond can relax, decompress after school, and truly be himself.
Equally life-changing is his new bathroom. With support from the Myfifident Foundation, Desmond has a fully accessible, curbless shower—removing a daily challenge. No longer needing the tub and wedge, Desmond can move safely and comfortably, gaining more independence. This renovation will support Desmond as he grows.
"He has such an imagination and loves being silly!"
When the family saw the transformation, they were overwhelmed with gratitude, knowing the impact it would have on their lives for years to come.
