The Story
A few weeks before starting college, Naji’s life changed dramatically. In September 2022, he suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paraplegic. Even after this life-changing event, Naji stayed focused on his goal of returning to school. To support him, Sunshine on a Ranney Day built a special space in his home for his physical recovery and schoolwork, as well as for him to spend time with friends.
In the aftermath of his injury, Naji endured months in the hospital—enduring surgery, relentless pain, and grueling rehab. Every day requires enormous courage as he faces chronic pain, neurogenic bowel and bladder hurdles, and the weight of life has irrevocably changed. Yet Naji greets each challenge with determination, resolved to heal, return to college, and find meaning in supporting others who face adversity. The new therapy and study room has a custom therapy table that folds down from the wall, a Pilates board for rehab exercises, an adjustable desk for studying, and a sofa for relaxing with friends. Each feature was chosen to support his independence, comfort, and future.
This transformation took on even deeper meaning through a generous birthday gift from Cheryl Bischof, honoring Naji’s remarkable spirit. Her contribution shines as a powerful celebration of his courage and perseverance. The project came together thanks to an amazing team of partners. We thank Sherwin-Williams for the paint, Frank Advertising and Top Knobs for the drawer pulls, Thibaut for the wallpaper, Real Floors for their skilled installation, Georgia Interior Painting for adding color, Service Wise Electrical for their expertise, and Nothing Bundt Cakes for the sweet treats at the reveal.
"He is dedicated to ... pursuing a career that would allow him to become a productive member of society - to give back what society has graciously given him."
Surrounded by the care of this supportive community, Naji now has a space filled with hope—a place that fuels his recovery, draws him closer to his dreams, and reminds him he’s not alone on his journey.
