🙂 17 years old 💛 Spina Bifida, Deaf, & Blind
Photo of Lizzie

Born with spina bifida, Lizzie is blind, deaf, and requires hands-on assistance with all daily activities. Her medical needs are complex and require constant, attentive care.

Lizzie was adopted as an infant by Michele, a former nurse who first met Lizzie while supporting her and her birth mother through significant medical challenges, even moving Lizzie and her birth mother into her house. When it became clear that Lizzie would need a permanent home, Michele didn't hesitate, she knew she could not let her go.

Now in her sixties and recently retired, Michele is a devoted single mother navigating her own physical limitations while caring for Lizzie's increasing needs. Bathing has become especially difficult and dangerous. Lifting Lizzie's 100-pound body in and out of a traditional bathtub several times a week places tremendous strain on Michele's body.

Despite her challenges, Lizzie has a joyful spirit. She especially loves being in the bathroom, where the music from Moana fills the room, bringing her comfort and happiness in a space that should feel safe and soothing.
